Ultra Fast Booting Blu-ray Disc Player

After the start of the player, how long it takes from the menu to start playing a disc is much shorter than conventional models. Start and load the disc from the standby is also fast for comfort movie viewing.

I have been waiting for this Blu-ray player since it was announced in January, bought this to use with my Panasonic VIERA TV set. VIERA link is the main reason I bought this — it’s for our exercise room, and my wife hates all the remotes. Great as a basic DVD/blu-ray player. Pop in a DVD, TV turns on, and sets the correct input. Also, one button selection of Netflix works great, and the new Netflix interface includes search. On screen interface is also very nice and easy to use. As will all new players, only has HDMI and composite video connectors, but single HDMI for video and audio is nice and is required for VIERA link.

Only reason for the 4 stars is DLNA (which in not just an issue with this device). Writing this in the hopes of saving at least one person the hours I spent setting this up. First, with my Windows 7 PC, the device was able to see and play the Windows Media Center .wtv files (I have a TV tuner card in my PC), so you can record shows on your PC and watch them on this player in another room. Compatibility with .wtv files was not mentioned in the manual, nor by Panasonic online support. Panasonic support also said that .mkv files would only play via a disk or the usb, but some of my .mkv files on my PC did play using DLNA (for some reason, only the files with an aspect ratio of 1024X576 or higher will play). Decided I needed a media server.

After trying Tversity, Playon, and Serviio, none of which would work with the DMP-BD75, I installed Mezzmo on my PC. Worked like a champ! The player sees all the files on my PC and they play flawlessly over my home network.

Remote will only control TV volume, power, and input, so if you switch to TV, you have to switch remotes. Don’t know why in TV mode the number keys couldn’t function to enter a channel number. Still, the remote will control all disc functions, Netflix, and all my video files via DLNA. One thing with the remote and VIERA link, the large power button turns on the player and will also turn on the TV at the same time. However, when you power down, using the large power button only turns off the player (which does make sense, you may want to leave the TV on). There is a second power button for the TV. If you turn off that button, both with shut down.

Overall, for just under $100 you can’t go wrong. And if you aren’t interested in DLNA or 3D, then this would be a 5 star player.

Update 12/18/2011

Panasonic recently release another firmware update, 1.33. I notice that the DLNA connection is much faster than before. However, I just upgraded my TV to a new Panasonic Viera Plasma set. It also has DLNA, and the DLNA files load extremely fast on the TV compared to this Blu-ray player. Sometimes on the BD75 it takes a minute or more to load a video, the new TV does it in seconds. Both are on hard-wired ethernet on the same network. Looks like after only 9 months this will strictly be a Blu-ray player on my system.

Select this model because it was streaming, DLNA, Wi-Fi and built-in (you do not need a separate dongle). I have not been disappointed in all of its functions. Wireless connectivity was a breeze – setup was easy and this model accepts a 32-character WPA2 key (as opposed to previous LG TVs and Blu-ray player models that were limited to 18 to 20 characters, as I do when I have a wireless dongle-bought it for our TV discovered!). The wireless connection seems to be much more stable than the other wireless devices we have. I occasionally turn off and on again to get a connection at startup, but this is not surprising since, as our scaly router … :-)

Blu-ray playback is really good. Our first Blu-ray Disc looked grainy and I was worried until I various discussions in the forum that this film criticizes read transfer. Many Blu-ray movies are apparently intentionally grainy because it duplicates the “movie” experience that the director intended. You can use the movie on the TV to reduce the grain, as this setting reduces the sharpness. Our second Blu-ray Disc was really smooth and detailed, like most of the discs. Playback resolution is very good, you can see every pore on someone’s face and the depth of field is amazing. There were no stutters, freezes or glitches with one of the discs we played. DVD upscaling is also good – I decided it’s not worth replacing DVDs with Blu-ray Discs in 1080p upscaled playback looks as good as Blu-ray playback.

Wireless streaming from Netflix was absolutely painless, once I worked out that the “Netflix ESN” that the player offers the Network Setup menu, not the code you need to use for Netflix connection. You must access the LG premium menu icon, the premium streaming services, select Netflix and get the connection code from the setup menu there. Enter the code only once on the Netflix Web site (“Enable a Netflix ready device” in your Account Settings) and Netflix streaming is automatic after that. Hopefully my experience will save other people trying hours, connecting with the wrong code! Netflix streaming is excellent quality, much better than broadcast TV for most shows. The player seems almost seamless streaming from Netflix with no stutters or degraded resolution problems, including high-definition movies. The only problems I’ve seen is when my internet connection is overloaded (Comcast Net access is pretty bad on Friday evenings and Saturdays in my area). I’m impressed. [UPDATE: Netflix changed the registration process, so you go to Netflix in the premium menu option, then enter your login information. The player memorizes the login, so you have to give this one time. I rely on previous information, as you may still register, the device - not sure how I already registered]

A recent firmware update (April 2011) was added Amazon Video on Demand that works great! It’s really cool to have these services. The unit also offers Vudu, Pandora, etc. but I have not used those. Firmware updates are easy, although this is not about to take 5-10 minutes to download over a wireless connection – you need to keep your nerve and do not turn off the player, thinks nothing happened. Finally, you get a message that the download is loaded and the player turns off and on again. If the download fails (which also happen to be one), the unit is not affected (good design).
[UPDATE: it seems to be two kinds of updates - firmware updates seem to update the disc playback features, software updates seem to update the Internet-access software, for premium services like Netflix, Hulu + or Amazon VOD. Do not use blame for LG clunky interfaces to these services, such as only the software that comes from Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, or. The YouTube interface is * really * annoying - difficult to find specific videos, and it plays the current, gnashing teeth, irritating video-of-the-day the whole time you try to find what you want. But this is Google's fault, not LG.]

I was really painless as it was to set up media streaming from PC via DLNA impressed. A copy of the Nero Home Media Server Essentials is delivered on CD – I installed it, the player automatically detects my PC and gave me a list of files that I could play from the media folder. That was * so * easy! DLNA streaming file has worked brilliantly: I just stopped an experienced problems with large (10GB) Home Movie File, and stammered. Then I discovered the USB port on the right front of the player. I was so with all the streaming solutions that I have the easiest way to play multimedia files from an external hard drive or flash drive over to see taken? The BD670 plays the large file from an external hard drive with no problems. Since the player has played everything I threw at it: AVI, MKV, etc. with many different codecs. With 3 firmware updates in a month, I’ve heard it, I am very confident that he constantly updates the play all current disc and file formats. So I’m a very happy bunny indeed!

UPDATE: *** Hulu Plus just appeared on the premium service (Network Access) menu, such as the 30th July software update! I can not vouch for the quality, because I’m not a member. But the demo videos seem to play just fine. Napster has been removed (“At the provider on request”) in December 2011.
UPDATE2: Had this for almost a year and I still love it. This is the most fun I’ve had with video services. The quality of the Blu-ray Disc and DVD playback is stunning. The streaming-video services alone are worth the price of the player. I do not for one minute regret buying the BD-670.

I’m very happy with Sony BDP-S580 Blu-ray players. Special thanks to Amazon visitors’ N. Porter “and” A.Brooks “for their detailed reviews, and troubleshooting tips, which allowed my family literally plug and play. I encourage you to read their posts before you buy this player, so you can avoid the mistakes and pitfalls encountered with other customers.

Follow the instructions in “N. Porter” and “A.Brooks” and set up is a breeze.

My family celebrated our sales by launching its first run with the adventures of Tim and Hugo. My sons (ages 9 and 7) sat on the living room floor, closer to the TV than ever before, because it is a theater experience, complete with popcorn was. We were surprised by the wonderful combination, 1080p Full HD with surround sound.

I registered in the Blu-Ray players from Sony and the downloaded media remote app (unfortunately it is not available on Amazon). We connected our Amazon Prime account to sign up for a free trial of Netflix month, and we had a great time the last two weeks trying out the variety of content on the Sony BDP-S580 Blu-ray players.

In summary, we really should have upgraded years ago, but it was not until we Sony offers a special on their Blu-ray players, March 2012, we decided to splurge a little saw. We bought our players for $ 114.21, which affects about 16 movie tickets (matinees) or four trips for our family.

Goodbye Movie Theater, Hello Blu-Ray. Thank you, Sony.

BTW: I also recommend purchasing a SquareTrade 3-Year Electronics Warranty. We have bought our warranty from Square Trade for more than five years and I only say good things about their service.
